Holidays and vacations are fun and happy occasions that people, young and old, look forward to. The wonders of healing and recharging we get from these breaks give us a refuelling of the verve that we should always possess at work and at play. Most of these leisure activities are physically tiring but it is amazing how we seem to gain more reserve energy from it. We readily say that it is just a psychological effect of the fun in the vacation. But some argue that the vitality is clearly felt physically and sustains us for longer periods. The debate whether the “renewal” is psychological or physical continues and may never be resolved. But physical or not, it is real and nobody seems to care where it lies. What is important is that we enjoyed the escape, had incredible fun and got what we wanted. But what about ineffectual vacations we sometimes observe with some people. Take one of your workmates, for instance. You learned her family was gearing up for a weekend retreat in a mountain resort with amenities coveted by moneyed vacationers – a real envy for the ordinary wage earner who cannot afford even a day in that resort. At any rate, the following Monday your officemate misses work. You and everybody else think she enjoyed the holiday too much to the point of exhaustion that she could not bring herself out of bed. The next day, she staggers into the office late and with puffy eyes. She slumps onto her chair and almost falls asleep. She cannot do much work, complains of headache and goes home sick. You start wondering. Isn’t a vacation supposed to charge you up? What happened to her? Everybody makes a guess but nobody would really know for sure. A month passes and you are shocked to hear that your officemate and her husband are separating. Everybody makes guesses again but nobody suspects that the holiday tryst was the culprit. In that vacation trip, many things went wrong. The husband was not able to properly get a package satisfactory to everyone. The issue blew up into a big fight and a nasty blaming session ensued. Nobody had fun but sulked in that majestic leisure resort. The parents ended up sleeping in separate beds. By midnight, the husband could not sleep so he went downstairs to the bar to gulp a drink. The receptionist was very attentive and comforting that the husband enjoyed it so much he ended up sleeping with her. Morning came and the family went home prematurely with the wife suspecting something untoward by the husband’s nonchalant but otherwise content aura. That started it all. Now, that is one point in favour of psychological effect of vacations and holidays on people! Are you looking for a weekend getaway?
