The “evil eye”, as the early and fanatic Jews regarded the camera, can indeed be “evil”. As it is with everything else on this planet Earth, photography can be used for immoral and sinful ends as it is also useful in the opposite extreme of saintly deeds. It is for the user of cameras to decide which way to go. Many types of cameras have been designed and invented for specific purposes. There are cameras for the average user that are cheap and easy to own. There are, however, models and brands that could wipe out a lifetime’s worth of savings of the low-income bracket wage earner. But some people could really afford such expensive equipment for their profession or hobby. Another group of cameras are for special professions and purposes. The (closed-circuit television) CCTV is used for security and surveillance purposes. Secret service have different kinds of camera for espionage work, some even as tiny as a short dressmaker’s pin. What are these things that can make the camera an evil tool? The CCTV camera, for instance, can be installed to eavesdrop or spy on hotel guests or private individuals. Catching unknowing victims in compromising situations is cause for anxiety when the recording or picture is used as a tool for blackmail. That is very stressful and maybe unlawful but the victim cannot just expose it to the police as it can compromise his or her integrity and reputation. If not for blackmail, such manner of using the CCTV on unknowing victims can bring them shame when the recording or picture is suddenly found in pornographic or social networking websites. Another instance of improper and immoral use of the camera is for pornographic purposes. Pornography or sex even as depicted as artistic work or for normal biological consumption can corrupt minors who may have accidentally or purposely viewed the recording or photographs. Minors cannot be expected to be as responsible as adults when it comes to matters such as pornography and sex. Of course, there are cultures that do not consider pornography as immoral and have instilled such way of thinking in their kids. But just the same, it has to be in a responsible manner that that kind of awareness and knowledge are to be imparted. However ubiquitous the camera has become, populations, especially parents, have to be vigilant with regard to its use. Our kids’ moral integrity is at stake here. If we become complacent and indifferent in these area, generations to follow may no longer have the moral integrity we, at present, so value. Looking for great photos?
