The active ingredient is ulipristal acetate, which is the artificial form of progestogen. Though it can be taken up to five days after the sexual event, it is most effective if taken within 24 hours. This pill works by releasing progestogen and tricking the body to believe that ovulation has occurred. In that case, the sperms are unable to fertilise the egg. If you vomit within three to four hours of taking the pill, then you should consult your doctor immediately. This medication can induce mild side-effects like nausea, headache, vomiting, painful periods, back pain and breast tenderness. You should avoid this medication if you’re allergic to ulipristal acetate, the active ingredient of ellaOne. This pill is meant only for emergency purposes and hence its consistent use should be avoided. Cerazette: Cerazette, also known as the mini-pill, consists of synthetic progestogen which is capable of stopping ovulation. It makes the cervical mucus thicker and causes the womb lining to increase. The thickening of the cervical mucus stops the sperms from entering the womb, and womb lining is made thinner so the egg cannot attach itself. It is a much safer option for women who are breastfeeding, since it does not contain another artificial female hormone oestrogen. This medication can be taken up to twelve hours after your usual ingestion time, making it extremely flexible in terms of providing actual protection against pregnancy. Cerazette should be taken continuously for an entire month, preferably at the same time. It should not be taken more than once a day. This pill is 99% effective in stopping pregnancy. The common side-effects include nausea, headache, mood change, acne, decreased libido and irregular periods. You should avoid taking mini-pill if you are allergic to artificial progestogen, also known as desogestrel. You should also avoid it if you are pregnant, or suffering from breast cancer, vaginal bleeding and jaundice. You should consult a doctor before the intake of any kind of birth control pills.
