A key issue that many educators are concerned about at the moment is that of classroom inclusion. The government are very keen to ensure that every single pupil within the UK’s schools gets the help and resources needed to get the best education that they can get. The head educators are wanting to ensure that all children get a relevant education, and it is a common occurrence that some teachers that are not experienced with certain types of special educational needs, such as autism and ADHD, feel as though the students that they have in their classrooms with these difficulties are disturbing the learning of the rest of the students in their classroom. This means that they often do not include these children in their lesson plans and, instead of differentiating the tasks that the rest of the class members are taking part in, the common thing to do is to exclude the child from the class with perhaps a teaching assistant and give them a different perhaps greatly simplified task of what their peers are doing. This is not because the teachers do not want to educate these children or because they cannot be bothered to teach them, it is simply because they feel as though they are not equipped to teach them without disturbing and affecting the learning of the other students in the class. By introducing technology into the classroom you get to add a whole new dimension to the classroom, although technology cannot answer all of the problems and instantaneously make sure that your classroom is a perfectly inclusive environment. What it can do is create new and innovative ways to learn, which will give your pupils in the classroom new opportunities to display their skills. Technology can be adapted to suit the different types of children within the classroom, meaning that the children who cannot normally concentrate on more traditional methods of teaching can still benefit from more visual and structured types of learning. Quite often children who cannot sit still and cannot focus on just your standard power point presentation can benefit from things a lot more visual, interactive and ‘exciting’, and there is a lot of new classroom technology that is now available and that enables all of these things. It is important that all children are given equal opportunities within the classroom and in this day and age we now have the opportunities to use technology to help us do this. Some of the types of classroom technology that could help with making your classroom a more inclusive place may be things such as the student response systems that are now available.
