In this day and age children spend most of their time using interactive resources, and during their down time they are more likely to spend time in front of the television, using games consoles, on the internet or using the computer in some form or another. Teachers used to be able to get away with using basic resources in the classroom, and before the government enabled more funding for education the resources that the teachers were able to use were limited to basic materials. Today, despite the government cutting a lot of spending, there is still quite a chunk of money given to schools in order for provide the newest learning resources within schools. Something that is important for teachers to remember is that their teaching and planning has to be relevant to children of this day and age. This means that the UK Department of Education have now assigned more time within the national curriculum to be dedicated to information technology. By offering additional time to this subject, the teachers of today are able to teach the children using technology, which is what they are often familiar with already and what they choose to use in their free time. The benefit of this is that the students, particularly those that that often become disinterested in lessons that they deem to be ‘boring’, are often a lot more keen to take part in the learning experience. By the teachers using technology even the most boring of lessons become interesting, and it is often a great way to persuade the more disinterested pupils to take part. One aspect of technology that is often a good and effective tool to have within the classroom environment is a student response system; this is something that encourages speaking and listening in a classroom. What it involves is a response system for each member of the class, and what happens is that the teacher asks a question to the class and they can respond using their response systems. This is beneficial in a number of ways, with the main point being that it stops the embarrassment of being picked to answer a question when the student does not know the answer, it also stops the same people answering questions all of the time. This enables the class teacher to see whether or not the class has understood what is being asked and it also encourages students who would not normally answer questions due to being unsure of the answer to have a go at doing so, and they will be able to evaluate their own learning and hopefully build up their confidence with answering questions within a classroom environment. Student response systems are a great way to encourage all children to get involved within the classroom, and it is a great piece of new classroom technology.
