There have been many studies in recent years about the types of effective questioning within the classroom. There have been discussions about the right ways to do it, as it is such a vital part of classroom life. You do not go through a day as a teacher without doing it, and many educators have different views on how it should be done. In recent years, there have been many discussions and disagreements about the most common question and answering technique. This technique involves the teacher asking a question and the class responding by putting their hands up when they have an idea of the answer, and the teacher then chooses who will answer the question. However, the problem with this is that educators state that it is often the same people that put their hands up after the teacher has asked a question, which means that only a few students ever get the chance to participate in the lesson. There are a number of reasons for this, one of which is that many students lack confidence, so even if they do actually know the answer to the question that is being asked they are unlikely to have the courage to put their hand up for fear of getting it wrong. One of the ways that a certain psychologist decided to conquer this problem was by random selection; this meant that the class teacher had some sort of method to randomly select members of the class to answer the question. This works well in some cases, seeing as it makes sure every single member of the class has the chance to answer the question; however there is also the embarrassment factor. That is, often when a child is selected randomly and they do not know the answer to the question they then get embarrassed. There is a new piece of classroom technology which has been developed to change the face of questioning, and that is a student response system. Each student in the class gets given a response system and then when the class teacher asks a question, all of the members of the class get the opportunity to answer it. This ensures that all members of the class get the opportunity to take part in the questioning without feeling singled out, and it also means that the class teacher can assess their students’ learning quickly and easily without having to do individual evaluations, so they will know whether or not the class have understood the question.
