With his much acclaimed $5million win at the Breeder’s Cup Classic with none other than Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard, Drosselmeyer may have been scheduled to make a comeback for his five year old season; a recent development arising out of his recent wins. Owned by the WinStar Farms, the BC champ was recently headed to explore his options on whether to stand stud or challenge his galloping skills at the top racing circuits especially after his determined comeback with the Breeder’s post a couple of disappointing races before finalizing on his retirement. The battle of November 5th between the race leader Game on Dude and stalker Drosselmeyer in the penultimate strides established the latter as a threatening contender for many contemporaries, a fact that could have played a pivotal role for his career the following year but unfortunately the racehorse has been retired to stand stud. Two very competent horses have already been retired and established to stand stud starting the following season, that quite much comes as a disappointment to their fan following. Having raced for not more than fourteen times in his entire three year old career, Drosselmeyer raced four times during his maiden season of which he won the first race not until the closing of the year. As a three year old, Drosselmeyer’s most important race starts happened to be the Louisiana Derby which he placed third against winner Mission Impazible and second place A Little Warm. Due to his insufficient earnings, the Triple Crown opportunity eluded him; a ‘Kentucky Derby’ participation was infeasible. However, Drosselmeyer soon made a comeback with the Dwyer Stakes which he placed again, finishing second. The Belmont Stakes, known to be the actual test of the champions in the three leg race Triple Crown affair, Drosselmeyer ran down the Dwyer winner Fly Down to avenge his place in the graded stakes domain as a potential three year old. Come the four year old season and Drosselmeyer continued to race surprisingly good with placing three very crucial graded stakes, the One Count Stakes run for 10 furlongs, Brooklyn Handicap of 12 furlongs and the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes for 10 furlongs. Drosselmeyer finished first for one and placed second in the latter two against a fairly competent field that comprised of Stay Thirsty, BirdRun and Flat Out. His most impressive race of all seasons came in on the life turning day, November 5th this season when he ran to victory flying past Game on Dude in the final stretches of the race winning the Breeder’s Cup Classic, a favourite among the racing critics. Drosselmeyer chiselled his way out of the 10 furlongs leaving behind Ruler on Ice who compromised for the third place finish behind Game on Dude. Drosselmeyer’s connections feel they tossed him out of the racing arena for good following a great exit from the game. What may cause disappointment to many racing fans around the globe, could very much prove to be a blessing in disguise for the racehorse who doesn’t have to strain his legs for another season, after all the four limbs are most crucial for any thoroughbred; read the history.
