Among the last and major stakes races left this season is the Hollywood Futurity grade 1 stake race for two year olds that would be run on December 17 this year. The race run since 1981, has been running annually at the Hollywood Park Racetrack for a distance of 1 1/16 mile on dirt until the track installed synthetic surface in 2006. The race offers 3 quarters of a million, $750,000 as purse prize and is one of the richest races for two year olds. With Bob Baffert having the highest number of probable racers this time, the race could add an incentive paramount in deciding the champion two year old for the season. Liaison’s Real Quiet Stakes win will be a major factor in deciding his chances for the Championship. His fellow contenders from the Baffert brigade could be So Brilliant, Sky Kingdom, and Secret Circle. While Secret Circle has already set the bar high with a Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint win, it’s a challenge of distance for the colt this time. With a third place finish in the Bourbon Stakes and a fourth in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf, Lucky Chappy, trained by Graham Motion, and would make his third significant start on the American race tracks following his preps in Italy. Longview Drive, J Hollendorfer trained colt, is all set to participate. He has had 5 starts this season with finishing in the money every single time. He won thrice, second and third once each. His wins at the Maiden Special Weight, Charlie Palmer Futurity and Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes have helped him emerge as a strong contender for the quarter less to a million dollar race. Another vague contender for the race would be Handsome Mike from the Scat Daddy progeny. Trained by Melody Conlon, Mike is a lightly raced horse with only three starts this season. He finished first in Maiden Special Weight which may justify his contention for the 121 pounds assigned in the CashCall. Empire Way hailing from the A.P.Indy bloodline will make his impending opening in an important stakes race following his satisfactory maiden break with first finish in Maiden Special Weight and a disappointing sixth place in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes, grade 3. Basmati is a comparatively more seasoned colt to probably shoot a contention in the CashCall following seven starts this season of which he finished in the money in five. He has already been exposed to grade 1 events like Del Mar Futurity and Norfolk Stakes. His last start at the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, a grade 3 race won him second. Rousing Sermon by Lucky Pulpit is also hailing from Real Quiet Stakes finishing second. The J. Hollendorfer’s second probable candidate for the CashCall has started five times this season with in-the-money finishes throughout. The CashCall distance of 8.5 furlongs poses a threat to all sprint starters as the distance clearly challenges stamina for each contestant. The winner should probably hold some chances of scoring for the next season of three year old starts and also his scoreboard for the colt of the year recognition though Union Rags and Hansen are most probably contesting for it most closely.
