She was “Sunny” Jim Ftzsimmons’ favourite filly, a top class racing thoroughbred from damsire Man o’ War’s offspring, mare Valkyr, and sired by famous 1913 bay colt Teddy’s offspring Sir Gallahad, a reputed French racehorse and leading U.S. sire who also sired Gallant Fox; she was Vagrancy, the 1942 filly championship winner in the three year old category and also a very prominent broodmare. Following a short lived winning stint as a two year old, Vagrancy, who started in eight races in her first season winning three of them, made an incredible comeback as a three year old. In the year 1942, the season when she was awarded American Champion 3-year-old filly award, she started 21 times winning 11 of them. Her most crucial racing career feature was her 12 starts against males, even though a finish better than second did not take chance. Known to have captured the handicap domain well, Vagrancy’s winning list consisted of honourable handicap races like Delaware Oaks, Pimlico Oaks, Gazelle Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks. She displayed outstanding performance, her characteristic grit and great courage in competing with older fillies and mares as she won the Beldame Handicap and the Ladies Handicap. Vagrancy is still remembered for her numerous races against her age competitors that eventually witnessed her winning them hands down. The year of 1942, lined with stakes and handicap races in victory, first place finishes against older contenders and 21 starts in some of the most recognized races for fillies in the American continent undoubtedly pushed for Vagrancy’s contention for champion filly which she obviously won. She was awarded the American Champion 3-Year-Old Filly along with the American Champion Older Female Horse awards. Her four year old season may have not been the most impressive one but she still managed to start in 13 races, of which she finished in the money in 10, winning just one. As an older contender in the Beldame Stakes and the Ladies Handicap 1943, Vagrancy managed to finish third and second respectively. With a satisfactory third racing season, she set off on her breeding career where she produced distinguished broodmares. Her foal Black Tarquin, became an English champion three year old; Vulcania who established herself as a reputed broodmare along with Natasha who did the same by producing Natashka who was recognized with an annual award for her pedigree.
