The greek island of Rhodes is a treat for archaeology and history buffs. The capital 'Rhodos town' itself is an example of a city that was planned in antiquity rather than developing organically. The three cities of Lindos, Ialyssos and Kamiros built Rhodes Town cooperatively as a business venture back in the second century BC. Of the three Kamiros and Ialyssos are now ruins (too close to Rhodes Town and victims of its success) but Lindos has thrived and is well worth a visit for its beautiful views, great restaurant and lovely beach. Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes Town is where the Collosus once stood. With its three medieval windmills it is a great starting point for a walking tour of the ancient sights of the city which should definitely include the citadel walls, medieval shopping streets, Knights Templar hostels and the Acropolis of Rhodes which sits on the curiously named heights of 'Monte Smith'. Further afield the ruins of ancient Kamiros are a delight. The well preserved gjhost town still has standing columns and enough information for the visitor to really see what living in an archaic greek city must have been like. For fans of the medieval, here is my favourite destination on the Island of Rhodes. Drive to Haraki, on the south east coast about half way between Rhodes town and Lindos. Then hike up to the ruins of Feraclos Castle which sits overlooking the sea. With nobody but the goats to disturb you, this is the ultimate in ancient exploration on the wonderful island of Rhodes.
