We know that SOA is still in the implementing stages and we know what it requires, but it is still hard to imagine how it operates and how does it interlink any system, whether they are compatible or not and if you would need a system migration in order to get its maximum benefits. In order to understand SOA, or Service Oriented Architecture better, you can imagine this as the federal government and the different systems as the 51 states. We all know that the federal government has a set of rules and regulations that all states must follow, but we also know that the states themselves operate quite autonomously from the federal government, so much so that each state may have different interpretation of the same rule from one state to another. SOA allows for that difference because it employs its own translation of the rules that each system has to follow. This translation comes in the form a separate module called the metadata and that these metadata has the ability to receive any communication from each system and translate the data that it receives before sending it to the system that needs it. This inter cooperation is much like the inter-state cooperation that happens when there needs to be some form cooperation between two states. They share resources, sometimes manpower and at other times, help from the federal government in order to achieve the goal that they need to achieve. SOA also makes it possible to have a faster form of data exchange so that there is less time that is wasted in processing the data that needs to be processed. This translates into less processor cycles, and in turn, makes it easier and faster for data to be transmitted to the other system than it would be if the system would still need to transform that data into a format that is compatible with another system and vice versa. SOA can also translate in better hardware service life for all systems concerned. Instead of having to upgrade your system or do a software conversion when going to the SOA route. Instead, there could be as little as a small recoding of the system software so that it will be fully compatible or upgrading of certain hardware to do the same thing. Currently, there are other architectures that are SOA like and these architectures are being used today. You have the Microsoft WCF, DCOM, CORBA, among others. These are being used right now in most large systems that use and maintain the World Wide Web. These systems are also a loosely coupled interactive set of systems that operate independently but allow for interoperability. Unlike SOA, however, they still have one problem that SOA may solve, and this is the ability to address future technological changes that will happen when there is a newer and faster software or hardware that will benefit from its use. Remember that SOA is still in the planning stages, but when it is finally implemented, businesses will stand to benefit from greater flexibility and future proofing technology.
