Civil Services is a highly coveted career field. It offers many jobs and opportunities which usually tag along power and prestige. One such job provided by civil services is in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). It has become one of the most preferred career choices of the youth. Thus, civil services, has also adopted a challenging method of recruitment which will give the entry ticket only to the most deserving candidates. The recruitment is preceded by IAS prelims, IAS mains and an interview. All these stages cover a wide syllabus which makes them all the more competitive. IAS prelims: For those who think that IAS prelims are easy to handle since it is the initial stage, need to think again. The difficulty level is equally high in this stage and candidates need to watch out for those tough questions. There are lakhs of candidates apply for a single post, therefore UPSC needs to cut down the number to a smaller amount. Thus, IAS prelims are conducted which consists of objective type of questions. The scores of this exam are not added in the final mark sheet. There is a vast syllabus which the candidates have to prepare well. Subjects like General Science, Indian Polity and Governance, Indian and world geogpraphy will be included in the IAS prelims exam. There has been a change in the syllabus. From 2011 onwards, the optional subjects will be replaced by CSAT. It is a civil service aptitude test which will consist of a speed test and a power test. IAS mains: An IAS main is another challenging exam you will have to deal with. It is not only important to clear this exam but also to score well, since the scores will decide your final ranking. Also, it is essential to clear the IAS prelims exam before applying for IAS mains exam. One must prepare for IAS mains with IAS prelims, as there is not much time for mains preparation after the IAS prelims results are declared. Civil Services Main examination has two optional subjects, one General Studies, one essay. There are also two language papers. Their scores will not be added, but it is vital to clear them. The syllabus mainly involves Maths and Statistics, Commerce and Management, Agriculture, any two branches of Engineering, Animal Husbandry etc. Both these stages are followed by an interview. It is only after clearing the IAS prelims IAS mains and the interview, you can become a part of the civil services.
