Perishable Shipping Tips You Need to Know

Business,Travel & Tourism
The holiday season is the most popular time for perishable shipping, with homemade goodies traveling all over the world in staggering quantities. There are some things you will need to know before preparing those goodies to be sent out to friends and family members to ensure they arrive in edible condition. Packaging is just the beginning, and timing is everything when sending anything perishable.

• Wrap cookies individually and freeze whenever possible before shipping. Wrap them in plastic, and then in foil to keep them cold during transit.

• Leak-proof freezer packs can be used to keep the contents of your package cold while being shipped. To ensure they do not leak, place them inside zipper type freezers bags as an added precaution.

• Freeze cakes, cheesecakes, and any perishable item that can be frozen, for at least twenty four hours prior to shipping. This ensures they will arrive as fresh as possible.

• Ship early in the week to avoid your package sitting in a warehouse for the weekend before it can be delivered.

• Whenever possible, ship the items overnight delivery. This can be costly for a large number of packages, so the above methods should be used in that case.

• Find a shipping company that offers refrigerated storage for your packages. This will help preserve the cool-chain integrity of your perishable cargo.

While the holidays may be the most popular time of year for perishable shipping, there are enough of these types of packages to warrant an entire industry devoted to it. With specialty food items, meats and other perishable products becoming more available, shipping companies have risen to meet the challenges of delivering these products.

When shipping perishables, check with the shipping company about their storage facilities, making sure they have pre-coolers, coolers, and freezers. This is where your package will be when not in transit. Special shipping containers keep the packages at their optimum temperature during transit.

How you package your items to ship is nearly as important as who you choose to ship it with. For items such as fresh fruits or things that can't be frozen, packing them correctly can help ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. For fruits that can be easily bruised, wrap each piece individually with tissue paper, and use extra balled up paper to cushion the spaces in between them. Pad the outer edges and sides to avoid bumps and bruising while being shipped from location to location. Finding a company that ships as quickly as possible is important as well, since all your careful packing and shipping will go to waste if the items take too long in transit. Shipping in the beginning of the week is one sure way to keep your package from being stranded on a shelf for the weekend, without the added cost of overnight delivery. Express delivery usually takes three to five days, depending on the destination, making it another option to explore.
