Wooden blocks proved to be an effective tool in teaching little children. It can actually enhance their creativity, reading readiness, counting ability, and social awareness. Wooden blocks aim to help children enhance their capabilities as well as provide a fun learning experience that would make them want to explore more. There were even experiments conducted to test the capabilities of children 4 to 6 years old. Small groups are invited for 30 to 45 minutes each week in a room especially created to play with the building blocks in a specified time or during their free time. For some weeks, children are allowed to play in the room for a limited time each morning. These children are of mixed ages. The project was introduced by an educationist when she developed a set of wooden blocks during the 20th century to her students and the success was widely accepted that other primary and kindergartens schools all around the globe adapted the system in their teachings. Originally wooden blocks follow the dimensions 5 1/2 inches long, 1 3/8 inches thick, and 2 3/4 inches wide. It has been customary to follow the dimensions until some manufacturers went out of their way and created sizes of their own but in proportion with the recommended size of the building blocks. The recommended room to use for children to play the blocks must be equipped with sound-proof panels which are usually built under the roof and the floor must have rubber mats to protect and ensure the safety of children while playing. Children are sometimes asked to illustrate their structure for their building on a piece of paper just like an engineer or an architect. Possible career paths are being introduced to children by doing so. Most of the times, children were even asked to do something specific like playground, tower, temple, house, barn, and other structures from simple to quite difficult to test their capabilities. The children may also be asked to build something with the wooden blocks like a group work where many hands are needed to build the specific task assigned by the teacher. It could be a Noah’s ark, a rocket, and the likes. Most schools have project like this and all children were given opportunities to participate in the project the moment they began to go to school. The project was proved to be successful as children find going to school enjoyable and fun while gaining knowledge. Teachers and parents have a lot of participating to do. Even though the children are allowed to play the wooden blocks by themselves, a teacher must be present to record the most amazing building and monitor the progress of the child. At home, parents are encouraged to do the same in order to establish continuity.
