At one time thought to be an integral part of a man’s attire, one could find men taking out a keychain pocket watch from their waistcoat pockets, opening up the flaps and checking the time, the chain peeping out of the pocket. As time passed and wrist watches and the Great Depression took hold, this sight gradually began to change, and gradually pocket watches started to go out of fashion. The Great Depression greatly reduced peoples spending power and pocket watch manufacturers started to reduce their scales of production. Similarly people started switching to wrist watches keeping in mind the increased convenience and the reduced requirement for care and maintenance. These days when someone shows off his keychain pocket watch, he is generally met with a lot of ridicule and is generally labeled as “old fashioned” or “a show-off”. However, what people tend to ignore is that such a person wants to keep past traditions alive. To date many people mistakenly seem to think that pocket watches can prove to be very expensive, but they could not be more mistaken. A keychain pocket watch may be acquired at very low rates and they are equipped with all the modern machinery and mechanisms that most modern watches use today. There are still some keychain pocket watch manufacturers that still manufacturer watches in order to sell them to the rich classes of people who are willing to spend a great deal of cash for a brilliantly engineered watch. Such watches are generally automatic and they will keep on working without the need to wind them as was the case previously. They are very different from manual watches which require battery changes frequently. But watches available from the bigger brands are typically very expensive and many people are not willing to pay so much for them. This is why they are greatly valued by collectors who really appreciate the value of these things. They would probably be the only ones would be willing to spend a lot of money on these kinds of watches. In the heyday of the keychain pocket watch, there were some manufacturers who did not let the changing fashions or the reduced fashions stop them from their productions. They kept launching new models one after the other in order to prevent the tradition from dying out. It is to be hoped that the tradition does not die out any time soon.
