Gone are the days of seeing cricket from a long range camera lens perched at the end of a cricket field. Thanks to a new pair of high tech sunglasses with amber lenses, designed by a Brisbane optometrist that are fitted with a mini high-definition camera about the size of a pea, battery, a transmitter and an aerial, which is kept in a pouch on the umpire's belt. Eventually it will go wireless. Sunglass inventor, Optometrist Patrick Gerry, who is the mastermind behind the invention has been secretly trialling the sunglasses for the last twelve months in Brisbane. Viewers will be able to see the game through the umpires close up range as soon as this coming Wednesday night at the SCG when umpires will wear the glasses to transmit live footage for Fox Sports. Sound is available but the umpires have requested it not to be turned on for live coverage. Now the home viewer can have the opportunity to get all the angles previously only seen through the close range eyes of the umpires on the field. Viewers can get the close ups to make their own judgements on lbw appeals, run outs and everything else umpires have to adjudicate on. Australia cricket will use some of the footage for appeals and reviews in the future. Yellow or otherwise known as amber sunglass lenses are used because they improve contrast, reduce glare, while preserving sharpness. They are used in many sports sunglasses and are a specialty sports lens because they’re excellent for overcast, hazy, or foggy conditions. Yellow enhances contrast by filtering out the somewhat scattered, out-of-focus blue light from the outdoors. Nearly all sports enthusiasts use them because of these attributes in their sports sunglasses . Polarized sunglass are also a favorite in the sporting industry as they further reduce glare and even out contrast in a wide range of conditions. Polarized lenses have become so popular that they’re now used by people who aren’t playing sport due to the superior level of comfort they provide. There are many online suppliers of polarized sunglasses and polarized lenses to replace in your favourite sunglasses to make shopping easy and affordable.
