The first gift of toys a child would receive would most often be a set of building blocks. The building block not only stimulates the sense of vision of the child by its colour but could also be a useful tool in building the child. There is no correct or improper way in playing with a building block. It is up to the child. The child develops mentally once they start to build. When one block is placed upon another at some point or the other it will topple and they will sort out how to build without the tower falling. They will learn to identify the different shapes, colour and maybe the alphabet, in a set of blocks for building. They will develop their powers of thinking by learning to decide what goes where. Another benefit is that when the child needs to place one building block on top of another, they develop hand and eye coordination. They would need to pick up the block in their hand and place it on top of the stack or pile. The block for building could also be used to build relationships with others. Playing with building blocks with friends and siblings teaches the child to be sociable and how to interact with others. They also learn co-operation. Sometimes the child may need to amuse themselves when they are alone. Concentrating on playing with the building blocks will teach the child the powers of concentration so as to reach the end output. The creativity of the child could be developed when they find ways and means in using a set of building blocks. The blocks need not be used to build only stacks and piles but maybe they will try their hand in a different design, maybe arrange it in a quadrangle or place it in a circle or they may build a structure that they would see in their daily routines. Finding different designs makes them more creative. A set of building blocks could be used from baby stage to toddler and at each stage of development the blocks could be used in different ways. Just like a long walk would begin with the first step, a building block is the first step to building a responsive and intelligent child. The blocks for building may be simple toys but they have a history of over 200 years and there is every chance of the period becoming longer.
