Perhaps the beginning of wearing body jewellery maybe rooted to the origin of humankind. Males and females wore them equally in the past and perhaps males wore them more than women. Ancient kings put numerous precious ornaments to show off their affluence and power. Others in the royal families also showed off their uniqueness from peasants by wearing jewellery. In fact, they enhance the beauty of women very much and rarely a woman is without some kind of body jewelry now. People now measure someone’s affluence by his or her ownership of the amount of precious jewellery apart from owning properties and cash. Today, as in the past as well, body jewelry made of not only precious metals but also with other cheap materials are worn as well. Nevertheless, precious metal jewelleries are in demand. Apart from precious materials, the jewellery made of silver, brass, titanium, diamond, plastic, synthetic materials, wood, clay etc., are also worn. The design of jewelleries also changes with time. About two decades back, ladies liked to wear small jewelleries but now they like to wear larger pieces of jewelleries, specially earrings and bracelets. Instead of precious metals, various artificial and cheap body ornaments are also in demand now. Many youngsters like to pierce various parts of their body and wear body jewelry now. They pierce their bellybuttons and genitals as well. People wearing knob like jewellery on their tongues, eyebrows, chins, bellybuttons and genitals are common at present. The body jewelry to wear in these places is also having a variety of designs and sometimes they are worth a fortune. For people who are not rich enough to buy jewellery made of precious metals, many jewellery shops provide an instalment scheme. They can reserve a piece of jewellery for a certain sum and pay some money initially and they pay for what is left within a certain duration owning the jewellery reserved at the end. Body jewelry is not just a thing to increase beauty. In many countries certain body jewelry like rings and necklaces are special traditional items that should be worn by bridegrooms and the bride at the podium. Without wearing them, they believe the custom is not being followed. It is required and expected by both the bridegroom and bride to protect the ring worn on their wedding day unto death. Some peculiar kind of jewelleries such as ones made of animal teeth, claws, bones; clay, wood etc are also worn by people. Wearing a tooth of a tiger around the neck is usually done by males to show off their macho personalities. In whatever way and in whatever forms, jewellery enhances the appearance of people. They are never going to be away from human civilization till doomsday.
