Building blocks can be used by toddlers, preschool children and school going kids as well. There are however a number of differences that parents should be aware of when selecting building block toys for their children. For toddlers and babies, nesting cups can work quite well. These cups can be stuck on top of each other and may provide a good place to start. Stuffed fabric blocks may also provide suitable building blocks, considering their light weight, soft texture and comfortable grip. Building blocks for this age group should be large enough to be picked up with extra muscle and body movement. They should also be light enough to be sustained and soft so as to avoid injury. The large size also helps to avoid frequent placement of the toy in the child’s mouth. Preschoolers can engage in building activities using more complex and slightly smaller blocks. Children between the ages of 3 to 5 will start carrying out projects that are quite big, rather than detailed. By big, they may be concentrating on designs to do with farm yards, towns, roads and fences. At this age, children may start using building block accessories like small cars and people. This will help to enhance their play, imagination and creativity. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 are quite the school going type. At this stage, their mental power will start to concentrate more on constructing actual items and objects as opposed to simple sprawling ideas. The following years will see them juggle between the two, with a little incline towards the former. Additionally, children within this age group may also enjoy playing with wooden block sets and smaller plastic bricks. Building blocks for children between the ages of 8 and 12 are much more complex and quite fun filled as well. Building blocks for this age group of kids come with a whole lot more styles of accessories, colors and shapes. Such building blocks allow the child to actually construct realistic working machines and at this point, the only limitation would be their creativity. Majority of the available hobby stores offer quite a collection of toys for children within this age group. Just like any other building toy in the market, the toy blocks within this age group require concentration and a lot of attention, only that it should be taken a notch higher. More information about building block toys and the appropriate age groups is available on different websites that stock such toys.
