According to most builders, masonry in general is a durable building product that requires very little maintenance; that is why it is widely used for both residential and commercial construction projects. Individuals who are opting for having a home built with this material should know that it has different types, and selecting the right one is a crucial factor to the cost of the project as well as the longevity of the structure. What is it? Originally, the word masonry basically meant any building structure using rocks and stones. Traditional homes built by early settlers were built using naturally occurring material including rocks and stones and was basically a perfect description of the craft. The workers who mastered this method of construction are known as masons. Probably the most popular use of this building medium is the pyramids in Egypt. Even today, experts are baffled as to how the Egyptians were able to build such structures with perfect dimension and proportion using nothing but manual labor. This craft is still widely practiced and as modern construction material such as Portland and cement blocks have been developed, its description has also broadened. Different Types There are many different kinds of masonry in existence. Following are a few examples of this building art. Stone – Stone masonry is probably the oldest type in existence. The pyramids in Egypt are perfect examples. The pieces that compose the pyramids are known as ‘dressed stones’. This means that each piece is cut into uniform sized pieces. Although ‘undressed stones’ which are irregularly shaped may also be used, this means that each piece has to be individually arranged and fit together to form the structure. Brick – Back in the 1960’s, brick had become one of the most popular types masonry ever made. They are still a staple material on buildings such as schools and fire station. Brick is made from molded and hardened clay. While it can get brittle over time and has a high water absorption rate, it also has high insulation capacity making it an ideal construction material particularly for places in colder climates. Concrete Block – Concrete blocks have overcome the immense popularity of brick. A concrete block has holes which serve as passages for steel rebar and concrete. Due to the design, concrete blocks have a structural advantage over other masonry making it a very popular choice. Benefits There are many benefits to the use of masonry as a building tool; some of them are listed below. Fire Protection – Brickwork and stonework provide reliable fire protection since the materials used to make them is fire-resistant. Homes built using such methods are less prone to catching on fire. Durable – Compared to other construction material such as wood or steel, masonry has a longer life expectancy. Concrete can last up to 100 years and still retain its durability. Because it is incredibly solid, it can also easily survive natural disasters like hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes and provide reliable protection to its occupants. Low Maintenance – Masonry requires very little to no maintenance at all. Once the structure is built, it will remain standing regardless of whether it is maintained or not. Its only problem is when built on a soft foundation, it may tend settle and develop cracks. Proper building techniques can avoid such a problem. In general, masonry is a durable construction method and is a plausible choice. Choosing the appropriate type to use all boils down to how much durability is needed from the structure and the kind of look that the architect wants to achieve. Hopefully, this article has provided helpful information regarding the different classifications of masonry and how to select the best one to be used for each particular appearance! C.
