More and more people are trading in their cable boxes and their over-the-air antennas for satellite TV systems. Why? Here's a guide to DIRECTV satellite TV that explains what it is and what it offers. DIRECTV Launched in 1994, DIRECTV is a satellite TV broadcast service based in California that transmits TV programs to their subscribers throughout the U.S. They currently have a fleet of 15 satellites that broadcast their programming to more than 16 million subscribers nationwide. DIRECTV's Satellite TV System DIRECTV's system consists of a dish that captures the signals broadcast from their satellites and sends it to a receiver. The receiver then decodes the signal and transmits it to your TV. A few years ago satellite systems consisted of a giant antenna and a series of black boxes that you had to purchase for $2,000 or more. Now, thanks to competition from cable and DISH Network, DIRECTV is giving away their system, including installation, in order to get you to subscribe to their service. Not a bad deal considering the equipment would cost you $500 to $1,000 depending on how many receivers you needed. If you want to record your favorite programs, they offer a DVR receiver that allows you to record up to 200 hours of programming. If you want to see your shows in HD (high definition) they offer a an HD receiver. And if you want the best of both worlds they even have an HD DVR receiver so you can watch and record programs in high def. DIRECTV's Service DIRECTV offers more channels than you can shake a stick at - more than 250 channels in all. In addition to the standard fare of movies, television series, news, sports, and weather channels, they offer a whole host of special interest channels devoted to history, comedy, nature, shopping, cartoons ... you name it. They offer six programming packages ranging from their Family Package which has 45 family-oriented channels, to their top-of-the-line Premium package which has 188 satellite channels, 67 XM radio channels, plus HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and Starz (31 movies channels in all). With this package you also get their DVR service and their HD channels. The Bottom Line On a cost-per-channel basis DIRECTV programming is much cheaper than cable, plus all their broadcasts are in digital or HD format. I'm truly amazed at the clarity of their HD broadcasts, and listening to a program in Dolby Surround Sound gives TV watching a three-dimensional quality. If you're thinking about switching from cable or over-the-air TV to satellite TV, then DIRECTV is a good choice.
