Now that Christmas and the New Year are done and dusted, you might be feeling a little run down. One of the best ways to recuperate after the holiday season and get back to your healthy self is to detox, but this doesn’t mean that you need to do anything drastic. Most detoxes involve strict eating plans, but if you want to give your body a much needed MOT all you really need to do is re-adjust your diet slightly. The point of a detox is to wash all of the unhealthy toxins that have built up in your body out of your system. It can help to rest your liver and can make you feel much more lively and refreshed, and the best part is that you only have to do it for a couple of days every month. Of course, you could keep going if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. One of the first things that you should do is go out and buy some fresh fruit and vegetables. You should aim to eat around five portions of fruit and vegetables every day and this is actually a lot easier than many people think. Simply by adding fruit to your breakfast, adding salad to your lunchtime sandwich, switching any high fat snacks for fruit and including two portions of vegetables to your evening meal should get you to your five portion mark. You should also do your best to drink between six and eight glasses of water a day to help flush all of the toxins from your system. You may also want to try drinking herbal teas, such as green tea, which is reputed to have many health benefits. While you are detoxing you should cut out any products that are created using refined flours. Instead, choose foods that have been made with whole-grain flours as these will be better for your body. Also, cut out caffeine as much as possible, so stay away from coffee and traditional tea, and don’t drink any alcohol as this will work as a stimulant to your system and could make your detox less effective. You should incorporate exercise into your detox as well, with at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, five times a week. If you have never taken up any exercise before or you have been inactive for a while you should slowly build up to this level – remember that you don’t need to complete your 30 minutes of excise all in one go and can instead go for two 15 minute walks, for example.
