Shiny new iPhones, purses, keys, rings, watches or jewellery... Nothing can ruin a day more than losing one of these items. There are few feelings like the complete panic that washes over you as the sudden realisation dawns that your phone isn’t in your pocket or your keys aren’t in your bag. The best thing to do in these situations is stay calm and follow these easy steps. - Phone: if you think you have lost your phone, first of all ask someone to call it so you can check your bag and belongings thoroughly. If you have no luck with this the next step would be to call your network provider and block your contract so that no one can make calls from your number. This block can easily be reversed if the phone is found so it is certainly a worthwhile precaution to take. If you have insurance on the phone you will need to call the non-emergency police number for your area and report the phone lost they will then provide you with a reference to pass to your insurance company. - House Keys: if you have lost your keys it would first of all be advisable to call the local police stations or if you have lost them in a certain area call the lost property office if there is one. If this is of no avail you may consider changing the locks to your house if you believe that there is a possibility that the keys could be linked to your home address. - Laptop: as your laptop will often contain personal information and data that you may not wish other people to see it would be sensible to password protect your laptop limiting the information people could obtain if it was lost or stolen. After calling the local police and lost property offices if this is to no avail it would be advisable go through what information was on the laptop that someone could access. If there was bank details, for example, stored on the laptop then it would be a good idea to call your bank for advice. - Jewellery: as above, it would be advisable to call local police stations and lost property offices. If this is not successful and the item is insured then you will need to report the loss to the police. If you find any of these items you should hand them in to a local police station, or if in a train station or airport, you will find they have their own lost property offices for you to hand in the items. If you find any lost property or you lose anything on a train contact national rail lost property.
