Now that pretty much everyone in the UK owns an MP3 player, the CD has taken a back seat in music sales in recent years. After all, why would you bother with piles and piles of discs when you can store all of your music on one single neat device and play it directly through your headphones or hi-fi? What most people do not realise though is that when purchasing an MP3 you are in fact compromising on quality. An MP3 is a compressed file. When a file becomes compressed some of the data is lost during the process. MP3s are needed for use with electronic devices so that there is sufficient space to store a regular sized music collection. This is great when you want to listen to music when you are out travelling or shopping but what about at home? When you listen to music through your hi-fi you may appreciate the sound quality of an uncompressed file. When purchasing music online it is almost possible to buy files in an uncompressed .wav format. However, there is a limited selection available and .wav files are enormous compared to mp3. One four-minute track may take up around 35MB of space on your hard drive and with hard drives still costing a fair amount of money this may not be the most economical way to store your music. In addition, .wav music files are often expensive, up to £4 per track! A CD offers far better value for your money. If you simply want to purchase a single song to listen to on your MP3 player then downloading it from an online store will be the quickest solution and could save you a few quid if you do not intend to buy the rest of the album. However, if you are thinking of buying an album and want to enjoy the music to its highest quality from home then your money would be better spent on a CD. Competition from other formats has meant that the price of CDs has reached an all time low, even for new releases. Search online and you can pretty much guarantee that you will find the album you wanted for less than £10. You can purchase this and have it delivered to your door in just a few days. If you are concerned about storage then there are devices that allow you to store your entire CD collection digitally. Unlike an MP3 your music will not be compressed and you can rest assured that your collection is stored safely should your CDs become lost or damaged. Whether you are into pop music, rock, dance, folk or a bit of everything, we all appreciate having the best quality sound available. Shop online for your CDs and you can choose from a range of music including new music releases.
