PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) refers to a computerized method for the storage and retrieval of medical images used in the diagnosis and care of patients in hospitals and other health care facilities. A pacs system enables the efficient storage and distribution of images so that they can be quickly and easily accessed by medical professionals. The images maintained in a PACS system come from a variety of medical imaging instruments such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and mammogram scanners, to name just a few. The images are converted to a universal digital format (DICOM) and are maintained on a secure central network. Medical professionals can access this data through the web or private networks through specialized workstations that are used to interpret and review the images. PACS has become widely used because of the cost savings that result from replacing hard copies of the images (such as film). The system has been shown to reduce the number of duplicate imaging tests required as a result of lost or misfiled images or because they are stored at a remote location. Because PACS enables the remote access of patient data, it provides capabilities for offsite diagnosis (telediagnosis) and enables practitioners in different locations to access data simultaneously resulting in better patient care and diagnosis. However, as the implementation and acceptance of PACS system grows, some medical centers have found that they are struggling with the amount of data that needs to be maintained. In response some have turned to data storage outsourcing as a solution with providers tailoring systems for medical imaging needs. Medical administrators and IT departments in these situations have to be particularly careful with security issues associated with this data since these images are subject to legal and regulatory requirements which need to be taken into account. Novarad’s dedication to its customers combined with a robust and affordable pacs system reinforces to us that our investment in NovaPACS was the right choice.”(http://ww1.novarad.net/novapacs")
