Brand new firefighting trucks are in the neighborhood of one million dollars apiece. This is part of the reason so many communities have cut back on their emergency and firefighting services. It's also why your firehouse vehicle maintenance is vital. So, if your department is in need of a new vehicle consider checking out used fire trucks as an acceptable and safe alternative. Many previous owned heavy operational vehicles will come with a certified status. This means there is a warranty on it that's backed by the original fire truck manufacturer. Not all vehicles qualify for previously owned certified status. The certified used warranty coverage most often begins when the original warranty expires and usually provides a certain number of years of use. A lot of these special heavy operations vehicles will have much needed firefighting equipment sold with it. Theses should include a number of SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) units, as well as, seating for a crew of 6-8 firefighters. Additionally, each seat will often have heavy duty Dave Clark headsets. Look for a truck that is installed with a back up camera as well so, you can safely back into the area of a scene or into the firehouse. Even with used fire trucks, it should have a cab that is equipped with heat and air-conditioning for the comfort of your firefighters, at all times of the year. An essential part of any firefighting vehicle is the ladder. Many used fire trucks have lit ladder rungs for firefighters when climbing up at night or in Smokey conditions. Check that the truck has an undamaged ladder that can pass all tests and inspections. Check to see if the truck has a generator. This can come in handy on so many occasions when the blaze is taking much longer to control than expected. Extra bright flood lights are critical so, your firefighters can do their job at any time of the day or night and in any weather conditions.
