Omega is a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer based in Bienne, Switzerland. It is one of the most well recognized watch making brands in the world. Even Neil Armstrong wore one of the Omega watches when he first set his foot on the moon in the year 1969. So, it is the fist watch on the moon. This timepiece is now exhibited in Washington D.C’s National Air and Space Museum. This brand had also been the choice of NASA astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, who was moreover the second human being to set his foot on moon following Armstrong, his mission commander. In his book, ‘Return to Earth’, Aldrin mentioned that while donating various things to the Smithsonian Institution, few of his items were stolen and his Omega watch was one of them. ‘Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph’ was the timepiece that was worn on the moon by both Armstrong and Aldrin. This chronograph wristwatch was also worn on moon all through Apollo 11 mission and during the first American space walk throughout Gemini 4. The Speedmaster Professional is one of the many Omega watches that have met the requirements of NASA for space flight and is considered as the only model qualified by EVA. There are several other models that are included in the Speedmaster collection but no timepiece could gain the recognition like Speedmaster Professional of Omega. It is one of the longest produced Omega watches. However, if you are under an impression that the Speedmaster collection was actually manufactured for space exploration, you are wrong! The timepiece was not designed originally for this purpose rather it was launched in the market in the year 1957 as a racing and sports chronograph and this set off the position of Omega as the authorized timekeeper for Olympics. CK 2915 was the first model of Speedmaster. This watch was introduced in the market in 1957 and incorporated the well-known Omega Calibre 321. Lemania’s Albert Piguet developed the timepiece in the year 1946. The name Speedmaster gained inspiration from the model’s unique tachymeter scale bezel that was found to be a prominent feature in their subsequent collections. The model was introduced with the series’ hallmark domed Plexiglas crystal, triple-registered chronograph layout, and high-contrast, simple markers. It even used Broadarrow handset of the brand. The second version of this model was launched in the year 1959 and the newer version became popular as CK 2998. It was introduced with alpha hands and a tachymeter bezel featuring black aluminum. The model underwent further updation in the year 1963 with straight baton hands and an uneven case for protecting the crown and chronograph pushers. A lot of stars and celebrities have been found to wear Omega watches. James Bond, the Hollywood star, has been wearing the timepieces from this brand since the year 1995.
