Fashion is always equated to beauty or good looks. When we say “old fashioned”, it almost always connotes something that is “conservative” or belonging to a past era and no longer in vogue. But we mean something different when we use “old fashioned” to reminisce “the good old days”, especially when talking about moral values. Nevertheless, old fashioned means just that in fashion – out of date.

Fashion being equated to beauty and good looks is an industry of people always on their toes. It is like being in the entertainment and film industry. The fashion industry is inhabited by artists who create clothes, fashion accessories, even jewellery and shoes that each complement to the overall effect of being gorgeous and stunning. Comfort of the wearer is also taken into consideration. Every artist wants to create a fashion statement. A fashion statement is something that sets an artist apart from the ordinary. A fashion article with a fashion statement renders itself so much importance and prominence that a single purchase of such a name-brand handbag can be as high as US$7,000.

Without having to emphasise on it, durability and quality are attributes that are naturally embedded on signature fashion articles. Aside from good looks and superb finish, these extremely expensive pieces of merchandise are so designed that their owners can be proud of them in terms of durability and quality to justify the excessively large amount they spend on them. More often than not, the handbag goes with other signature items such as belts, bracelets, chokers and necklaces, hats, pants and tops, shoes and wristwatches. Whole lines of eau de cologne, eau de toilette, lipstick, perfumes and other cosmetic products are later additions that make more money when the main products have already been established in the market.

Some fashion name brands stay in the market for a very long time and become a byword even outside the fashion world. They stick around even when their first users have bequeathed the brands to their children. The new generation embraces them for their own. Some of the artists who were responsible for the creations become so intoxicated with their successes that they do not listen to their fashion consultants and peers anymore. They become so swell-headed that they venture on to unchartered waters that sometimes cause their downfall. Fashion has to be keen to trends and not just be subjected to caprices and whims as its guiding stars. Common sense still plays an active role even in an industry as effervescent as fashion.

Being a visionary in fashion does not mean just dreaming in the clouds. While it is true that artists find their inspiration “in the clouds”, their feet, like everybody else’s, must be planted firmly on the ground.
