What is fashion to man? Why is it so “expensive” yet sought after even by the lowliest of commoners? Even royalty cannot escape the wonderful clutches of fashion. Is it basic for us humans? Why, even toddlers know what they want and say no to clothing and accessories that do not appeal to them. Do you find a practical function of fashion to man? But man’s perception of beauty and of intangible happiness such as the feeling of love, music and poetry lifting the soul and logical understanding of technical matters is what sets man apart from other creatures. Although it is not one of man’s basic needs, fashion is definitely one of his basic wants. Made to choose between a “colourless” ill-fitting clothing article and one that fits comfortably and snugly in a colour that strikes a soft and sensitive cord deep inside, which one would you wear especially to an important social event? It would be very stupid to choose the flat and ugly one unless you have some bizarre ulterior motive to. Man is both sensible and sensitive. Funny but we always use the term “man” when we describe Homo sapiens even in delicate and tender matters such as fashion. While both men and women have similar responses and sensitivities when it comes to fashion, it seems like the industry focuses on the woman and her apparel as is evident in advertisements and publications. It is probably because of the innate and customary characteristics of the relationship between man and woman with the latter being sought by the former that “beauty” is attributed to and conferred upon her. It becomes natural for the woman to “attract” the man who has to prove himself in more ways than one and win her. The man who walks the ramp and joins females in the catwalk is not by any means less manly except if he is, in actual fact, physically or psychologically inclined to be gay. If he is half the man he is supposed to be, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he gets into a relationship with the exceedingly beautiful females he works with, which could cause both their careers. Fashion, like entertainment and film, is an effervescent and fleeting world. It can powerfully shoot you up to stardom one day but one unfortunate blunder and you end up at the bottom of the heap. Only the most sensible of the breed stay and build their careers steadily day by day. Doesn’t fashion remind us of the fairyland we were transported to when we were yet tiny kids amidst multi-coloured bubbles our moms surround us with drawing giggly chortles of delight and glee each time one bursts in inaudible “loud” pop? We feel disappointed at the same time, though, losing one more lovely bubble. Do you like quality clothing that is also comfortable?
