To avoid clashing with each other each learning institution all over the world is left with the mandate to design their own graduation dresses. In United Kingdom Burgon society was formed in the year 2000 to encourage use of these gowns by studying the history and current use of the academic gowns. In the year 2011 the third edition of Shaw’s reference book on British and Irish academic dress was published and release to the public by this society. The modern gown design originated from the robe worn underneath an item of clothing in the early times of medieval called cappaclausa that resembled the long black cape. With the minor adjustment worn by all university students and was considered the as the official graduation dresses that were either in black or any other dark color. Master of art candidates wear the same kind of gown in all the English speaking countries but it may also include with one of the learning institutions colors. Bachelors of Arts graduates wear oxford doctors shape whose sleeves are bell shaped while the masters of arts candidates were the Cambridge doctor’s shape gowns which are long sleeved and closed at the end and also has a slit above the elbow where the arm passes through. Cambridge MusD gown is a form of graduation dresses, which make the two gown shapes. The undress gown is black and normally worn during lecturers by old universities although it is rarely used this days as most prefer to use the dress gown. In oxford these universities undergraduates wear graduation dresses that are a smaller version of the bachelors of Arts that are sleeveless, knee length and has two streamers at the back. Learning institutions in Cambridge each has different kind of gowns that are hardly ever worn apart from older universities. The habit, which is worn over a black gown, is another form of graduating dresses, which is reserved for very formal ceremony and worn by particular group of people in Cambridge or oxford universities. Hoods are also used by this two universities on these special occasions and are made of either full shape or simple shape pattern. The color and the inning of the hood distinguish the position or the faculty of the wearer. The mortarboards are academic caps that are worn by graduates and undergraduates and have been a symbol for academia.
