You most probably have read about using biogas fuel as an alternative fuel resource for cars and for cooking gas. I first heard about it during my vacation trip to Manila. During my stay in Saudi Arabia, the price of petrol does not bother me at all because it is very cheap here in Riyadh. Actually it is cheaper than a bottled water. That is why when I saw the price of gasoline fuel in Manila I was very shocked. It has gone up ten times since I left my home country. The search for a cheaper and environmental friendly alternative fuel is going on although there are alternative energy resources that are already available in the market. Biogas is among the few that is active in the global market. Biogas is an alternative renewable energy source that is extracted from organic waste materials. Compared to petroleum fossil fuel the manufacturing process for biogas is much cheaper. How is biogas generated from the organic waste materials? It is a biological reaction caused by bacteria degradation. The organic materials is being attacked by bacteria in the absence of oxygen hence anaerobic digestion occurred and gas in the form of methane and carbon dioxide is produced. The digestion process occur when there is an absence of oxygen. The ideal Environments are marshes, rubbish dumps, septic tanks, and Arctic Tundra. There are improvised methods developed by producing complex machines to have a better result. The conventional method that is being used is the "liquid process" which done by adding water to the organic waste materials. There is another method used and it is called as the "solid process" simply because the process is done on landfill sites. The next stage of the biogas fuel generation process is how do we collect and transport for use. Compressing and putting methane gas into a container is very hard, that is why it is being used as stationary fuel. This means that we use it directly from the site where the gas is being produced so we do not need to transport it. Biogas fuel are widely applied at home for cooking, heating, lighting and absorption refrigeration. What are its benefits? These benefits are identified below: 1. Save money from your energy bills 2. Not very hard to control and operate 3. It is quicker to produce. 4. There is no smoke or smell. 5. Free from dark carbon stain on your pots or cooking wares. 6. The sludge produced could be used as a fertilizer. 7. It reduces the risk of transmitting pathogen compared to untreated waste. 8. It contributes to the dependence from fossil oil fuel thus we are helping our economy at the same time helping the preservation of non-renewable fossil oil. It helps reduce the generation of air pollution and the help control the global warming of our planet. 10.It provides additional source of jobs. As a summary, Biogas fuel has the potential to replace fossil oil as the main source of fuel for our energy requirements. Hence we need the whole world's cooperation to work for its improvement. I am hoping that one day, we can clean up the atmosphere we breathe in and live a much safer environment.
