Futurity Stakes, more commonly known as the Belmont Futurity is a race who’s tradition dates back to 1888 when the race was inaugurated at seven furlongs for two year olds. The race was first run on Labour Day at Sheepshead Bay Race Track back then, is now run annually at the Belmont Park Race Track and was until 1956, a race with higher purse than Belmont Stakes. Until the Breeder’s Cup Juveniles came into existence in 1984, the Belmont Futurity remained as one of the most challenging races for the two year olds. Quite obviously, the list of race winners includes the invincible Secretariat, Man o’ War, Colin and Citation. Affirmed joins the list with his track record at 7 furlongs at 1:21.60 while James G. Rowe, Sr. tops the maximum number of wins by a trainer by 9 wins. Another Futurity race, the Breeder’s Futurity horse race was first conceived and run in 1910. Initially run at the Kentucky Association racetrack, the Breeder’s Futurity was later moved to Keeneland race Course and is a part of the Breeder’s Cup Challenge series. Winners to this race gain qualification for the Breeder’s Cup Juveniles automatically. Dullahan, won the Breeder’s Futurity Stakes in 2011. The maximum wins by a trainer stand at 6 by D. Wayne Lukas. One of the longest races for the two year olds, this one and one sixteenth mile race was run the fastest by Polar Expedition in 1993 in 1:42.20. The race is a Grade 1 event and offers a high purse prize of $500,000. The other very integral Futurity Stakes for two year olds is the Hollywood Futurity that was recently renamed to CashCall Futurity Stakes following sponsorship issues. The race was inaugurated not long before in 1981 and has been run since its inception at the Hollywood Park Racetrack in California. CashCall Futurity is a significant two year old distinguisher and quite a few winners have gone ahead to win the Kentucky Derby, including Alysheba and Thunder Gulch. The race offers an incredible purse prize of $750,000 and is a Grade 1 event run towards late December each year. Track record for CashCall rests with Afternoon Deelites at 1:40.74 while Bob Baffert hold the maximum wins by a trainer. The special feature of the race track happens to be the synthetic cushion track that was installed in 2006 until which it was a dirt track.
