What do people usually do on the web? Most use the internet to chat, send mail, trade or have fun in business and/or social networking websites. Much like in the physical world people are either at work or having a good time. The web is a good looking glass for anything and everything that man does, is doing and will do at work and at play. Type it on the search box and you will definitely find it online. Existence is basically divided into two faces. On the one hand, man works for his needs and survival here on Earth. The other side of man’s life is enjoyment of the works of his hands. Man learned to develop a routine to harmonise these two sides of life. The work side is of course harder to do than the enjoyment side. As man became more adapted to this scheme of things, he developed skills in getting what he wanted in his most efficient way so he can have more time to enjoy what he worked for. He started trading what he had plenty of with things more difficult for him to acquire from other people. That was the beginning of barter or trade which matured into what we now know as business. Devices and machines were invented to help make man’s tasks easier and faster. The first inventions were simple machines. These simple machines became the foundations of more intricate machines such as engines that were each uniquely designed to run present-day automobiles and airplanes. As man’s tasks became easier and faster, his inventions and innovations crossed to the leisure and pleasure zone. Many of the leisure-zone contraptions included devices such as the gramophone which played music to please the sensibilities and soothe the body and soul. Others were combinations of work and leisure inventions such as boats, cameras, cars, planes and yachts. Manufacture and sales of man’s inventions required people to perform the various processes and tasks. Thus began the history of employment in business that grew with the demand for the products. In all these processes and transactions, communication was crucial and so the telegraph and the telephone were invented. This made relay of vital information easier and faster from one end to the other and back. Bodies of information grew and needed archiving. Allied businesses and services came into being as required by both buyers and sellers such as barber shops, hotels, laundry shops, libraries, newspapers, repair shops, etc. All these documented and recorded information about the two faces of man’s existence are both heritage and opportunities today. They are all in the web and can be used by today’s man for work, leisure and everything else in between. Chart your course and make a contribution to that history.
