Carpet cleaning is an important task yet almost unappreciated and neglected by office and building administrators. They are viewed as a low-rank personnel job along with cleaning lavatories, toilets and urinals and therefore attract little attention. But look what happens when these tasks are neglected by those assigned to their care and maintenance. Everybody complains about the foul and offensive smell not to mention the filthy and shabby look. It is time we consider the carpet for its true value. How did we start the concept of carpeting? What are the benefits we derive from it? What are our obligations and share of the load it carries to maintain a mutual benefit and satisfaction of the co-existence? Carpets were first conceptualised and used for the luxurious softness it offers man. They used to serve as fluffy mats and walls in the desert tents where they originally came from. The western man who travelled to that faraway land was fascinated by the comfort and luxurious feeling the carpet offered as a floor mat. He brought a sample to his homeland and was amazed at how it effectively softened the harsh coldness of the walls and floors of his stone abode. That was the beginning of the carpet invasion of the western world. Local craftsmen learned the art and science of carpet making. They even went so far as to manufacture synthetic material for it. Although it may never equal the rich comfort and luxury of the eastern carpets, the synthetic product can serve practical purposes that were once the exclusive domain of the imported floor covering. They not only provide satisfactory comfort to its users but also enhance the good looks of halls or rooms. They can be coloured to complement specific themes. Given the list of aesthetic and practical benefits we get out of the lowly carpet, is it not just apt and fitting to give it the care and maintenance it obviously requires? After all, neglecting the carpet backfires to us when it starts to smell and become a cause of discomforts and diseases. We also do not want a shabby-looking hall or room on account of a dirty and shabby carpet, do we?
