The Church denomination I am a member of, is the Southern Baptist. When I was a teen and in my later years, I knew there were some members that were chosen and voted into different positions within our Church body. Some of the different members that make up our Church are the Pastor, treasurer, secretary, choir director, Sunday school teachers, and deacons. I attended many services over the years, but mostly attended just Sunday morning worship service as I got older. I always figured or thought I knew what each of the chosen members did, as far as their duties or responsibilities. From observing, I knew that some of the duties of the deacons were to pass the collection plates around during the Sunday morning service, at time of the offering. And I also observed that during times when we took communion, the deacons were the ones that passed out the grape juice and small wafers of white, unleavened bread we used, and they came around with the holder when we were done, upon which we placed are communion cups. Besides helping the pastor, with offering and communion, the deacons were also responsible for other duties in the Church, as asked to do so by the Pastor. I always thought that the deacons were just picked at random by the pastor, maybe because they attended service more regularly then most of the other members, or they might have volunteered to be deacons. After reading the Bible, and doing a little research, I found out that to be a deacon, is a great responsibility, and to choose someone to fill that position, must be done by a majority vote, and the church group must be very familiar with the person that they are considering to be a deacon, the Bible tells us in great detail, that a deacon must be chosen wisely, and they must maintain very high standards.
