Every girl should own a summer dress, if only to be worn when the weather is especially hot. Many women think they don’t suit summer dresses, but this certainly isn’t true – every body shape suits these dresses, it’s just a case of finding the right style to compliment your shape and skin tone. The shirtdress is exactly what it sounds like – a shirt that looks like a dress. It usually comes down to mid-thigh or possibly higher and generally has little to no structure around the waist. You should never wear a shirt dress without a belt though, as this is the only real way to define your waist in one. Not doing so will leave you looking swamped and boxy, so invest in a matching belt when buying your shirt dress. You can wear leggings underneath your shirt dress or, if it’s warmer or you’re feeling daring, you can simply pop on a pair of heels or flats and wear your shirt dress that way. Cardigans and open blazers work well with shirt dresses in the summertime. The skater dress is the complete opposite to the shirt dress – it’s inspired by the dresses worn by figure skaters and is very form fitting on the upper half and fuller on the lower half. Skater dresses have well-defined waists and look amazing on pear and hourglass shapes thanks to this. You can add a slim belt to them to accentuate your waist even further, and accessorise with a brooch or necklace. The maxi dress is the ultimate summer dress – it’s floaty, lightweight and incredibly feminine. If you’re quite short you should go for a tight fitting maxi dress to stop the fabric from drowning you, whereas taller frames will look their best in billowing maxi dresses. Plus size shapes can pull off this look amazingly as well, as the high waistline helps to hide any lumps and bumps around the middle. If you’re after a great summer dress, look out for a maxi dress or skater dress.
