Whenever you ask a group of golfers about their swing problems, you’ll inevitably hear about the slice, the hook etc., but when examined at a deeper level it always falls back to one main problem, inconsistency. If you are playing well one day and then the next day you’re playing lousy and you don’t know why, you are experiencing probably the biggest frustration any golfer can feel on the golf course, but the big question is how do I fix it? Being inconsistent is something we all have to deal with, but the answer to this problem might really surprise you. You may already have a good golf swing, but there is one basic body movement that is critical to your golf game and that is balance. While golf swing trainers will always tell you to keep your balance, they never seem to tell us how to do that. Now ask yourself, have you ever been walking along and suddenly tripped, what happened? You probably tossed your arms out or shifted your body weight in some way to recapture your balance to stop yourself from falling, right? How did you do this, well it happened automatically in your brain, no thought was necessary. Believe it or not, this same process that stops you from falling down may very well be killing your golf game. How does this effect your golf swing? Our bodies will automatically try to protect us when it feels we are in danger of falling down. So if you do not start your golf swing from a balanced position, your brain will automatically try to regain that balance for you, whether you like it or not. Your body will steal the same muscles you were using in your golf swing and use them to get your balance back. This will mess up your golf swing making it almost impossible to hit the ball square and forget about being on target. The real secret here in a nutshell is that if we start our swing from a balanced position, than our body will fight to maintain that balance throughout the swing and bring that club back square every time. To make this happen we must engage all the muscles from the very beginning of our swing. Think about when you were a kid watching your favorite major league baseball players. The center fielder was always in a crouched position, with his weight evenly placed on both feet. He had all his muscles engaged and was focused on one objective, quickly reacting to where the ball was hit. The thing about balance is understanding that each muscle in your body has its opposite, such as the bicep muscle versus the tricep muscle. Each muscle helps to counter balance the other when the body moves, but the key to balance as it relates to the golf swing is having all the muscles engaged at the same time. For example, instead of just standing over the ball engaging only the muscles immediately needed, it is best to bend the knees getting all the leg muscles working from the beginning. By implementing this simple technique your body will be working with you throughout your swing and should improve your game without having to change your basic swing.
