If you want to become a professional coach, there are several training options you may take. This article was created to help you choose one according to your needs. First of all, it should be noted that being a coach is a professional occupation. And a profession is something that requires some sort of education. If you had some previous experience in life or other spheres of job or you completed some online course, that doesn’t mean you don’t need any more training. Although nowadays anyone can easily proclaim him/herself to be a “coach”, I still believe that to become one, you should go through specialized education. You may choose one of these variants: Option #1: as a beginner, sign up for a primary coach training course Option #2: sign up for a coach training course for some practicing helping professionals, such as therapists Option #3: sign up for a professional training course. Primary Coach Training Courses These are extensive programs that include all the range of skills and abilities needed to become a skilled and well-trained coach. There exist a lot of schools that may provide you with a certificate, but it is preferable to choose the one that offers not less than 60 hours of basic training. Other options will prevent you from raising your skills and abilities to the level of a professional. Some coach training schools may offer courses accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), which is one of the most prominent member-coach organizations in the world. Its members are over 17,000 in number. The main aim of the organization is to raise the status of the coaching profession. They do it by setting high professional standards, offering an independent certification and creating a certified coaches network. Among the acknowledged primary coach training schools are CoachU, Coaches Training Institute, InviteCHANGE (formerly Academy for Coach Training), New Ventures West, Newfield Network, Relationship Coaching Institute and others. Mind that ICF accreditation is a guarantee of a more qualified training, so if you don’t desire to take it, your aim is not a professional education. Coach Training Courses for Helping Professionals If you already work as a helping professional and don’t want to gain skills you already have, you may take this course. It has its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, your training will go faster and be concentrated on getting something new or exceeding the already-gained knowledge. However, the disadvantage is that you may miss some important skills since you haven’t started from the basic level. If you decide to take a course of such a type, you may choose one of these programmes: Institute for Life Coach Training, MentorCoach, Hudson Institute, College of Executive Coaching. Professional Training Courses As you may have guessed, these courses are for specialized or (according to ICF) “advanced” coach training. First it is important to find your area of specialization as it is going to be a foundation for your business. If to compare those, who have a wide area of specialization (the so-called Life Coaches) and those, who have a narrower, specified one, the latter are better with getting on with and gaining clients. A professional of such a kind can enroll a client easier by focusing entirely on the area of his/her specific needs and offering solution-based advantages. Some of these professional training schools in addition to a specialized training offer also a primary coach training course. So if you are willing to, you may get all of the needed education in one place. Besides, the price is often quite reasonable. coaching training
