Transformer Pad Infinity In Mobile World Congress 2012, happening right now in Barcelona, ASUS announced the next generation of its Android-powered tablets. The new line of tablets has been rebranded to be called “Transformer Pad”, such as the Transformer Pad Infinity. This deviates from the previous naming convention, of ASUS Transformer Prime. The reason? Most likely due to Hasbro’s lawsuit against ASUS for the “transformer” in the naming. Let’s take a look at the Transformer Pad Infinity. This device is being positioned as the higher-end alternative to the original Transformer Prime. It will actually come in two different types of CPU, depending on whether you want the LTE option or not. The LTE powered Transformer Pad Infinity comes with a dual-core Qualcomm MSM 8960 Snapdragon S4 CPU. I know, it’s a mouthful. If you opt for the Wi-Fi only version, you’ll get the same NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor being used in the current Transformer Prime. Transformer Pad Infinity Major Selling Point The major selling feature is the new screen, which now comes at a whopping 1920 x 1200 resolution. It’s the same size as before, at 10.1 inches. This is really quite amazing, because the above resolution is being used on big 20 inch+ monitors. And now it’s packed into a 10.1-inch screen. It’s just mind blowing. In other areas, the Transformer Pad Infinity is almost identical to its predecessor. The screen is Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass for protection. The back has an 8MP camera, while the front is equipped for a 2MP shooter. There is 1GB of RAM and HDMI output. It’s interesting to note that the Corning Gorilla Glass will be the second generation Gorilla Glass 2. OS IN TRANSFORMER PAD INFINITY Inside, the Transformer Pad Infinity is going to be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Thank goodness. The battery life is rated at around 10 hours, but of course, that can be increased to 16 to 18 hours once you attach it to the signature keyboard dock. Presumably the dock is cross compatible between the Transformer Prime and the Transformer Pad Infinity. Currently there is no pricing information available, although it’s likely going to be higher than $500, since the current generation Prime is priced at $500. This may become an issue later down the road for ASUS, since iPad 3’s release is imminent, and will likely feature a retina display at only $500, like how Apple always price their iPads. One last note, I find the name “Transformer Prime Infinity” to be funny. It reminds of me either the popular iOS game, Infinity Blade, or the iconic Buzz Lightyear’s beloved command “To Infinity and Beyond!” Really looking forward to seeing more info on the Transformer Pad Infinity!
