Mare's tail is an herbal weed that is very toxic in nature. You can find this plant growing in bodies of water. You have to be really careful because it can be very poisonous to horses, which is why it is also referred to as “horse’s tail” even though it is not related to the actual plant with that same name. If you own horses and you let them drink from bodies of water when you take them out, you need to be sure that there is none of this plant growing in or around the body of water. If you do not do everything to ensure that your horse does not ingest it, you could definitely lose your horse. How can you tell if mare's tail is growing in or around the bodies of water that you take your horses to? This plant is leafless, so you do not have to worry about there being any stray leaves of it lying around even if the plant is gone. The plant has a long, hollow stem that makes it easily removable at the base. However, that does not get rid of the root. So, even if you pull this plant out, you will likely have to do it again until you get rid of the root. At times, this plant actually resembles just green bamboo with the way the stem is. Even though mares tail is poisonous to horses and even other animals that may eat it, it will not harm humans. Though, of course, who would want to try eating it? The thing is that, if you do suspect that your horse or other animals have been poisoned by this plant, you need to remove the animals’ access to the plant. Then you need to feed it a treated diet with thiamine hydrochloride. It is also recommended to feed the animals grains with this type of treatment as well. This will help the animal get over the poison. If you own livestock and other animals that eat plants, you should definitely keep an eye out for mare's tail. It can infiltrate the plant life and make your animals sick in a heartbeat. Just keep in mind that unless you get rid of the root, you will have to continue weeding the plant out of your vegetation. If you can keep your livestock away from it altogether, that is really the best thing that you can do.
