Cbeyond is a nationwide provider of IT and communications services. Worth, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, etc. Earlier this month, Atlanta-based Cbeyond announced its expectations for reasonably nominal growth in 2012 as it cut 300 entry-level sales jobs and supporting personnel under a broader plan to concentrate on small and mid-sized businesses that require more advanced networking and cloud services. In conjunction with its initial fourth quarter and 2011 fiscal findings, the provider has also revealed considerable modifications to its distribution channels so as to capitalize on 2010 cloud-related acquisitions and better serve what it refers to as the rising number of “tech dependent” SMBs. In a conference call with investors, President and CEO of Cbeyond, Jim Geiger, explained that the cuts were mainly “in markets that underperformed our expectations." Geiger asserted that most of the reductions had occurred in mid-February, while the rest were done through prior attrition. However, despite the large cuts, Cbeyond is currently in the process of constructing two new direct sales groups. One of the new groups will be a team of 125 sales reps devoted to selling solely to clients the provider has classified as “tech dependent,” (which, according to Cbeyond is considered to be just about one-half of its 62,000 clients). According to Geiger, the provider intends to be half-way through its hiring by the end of the quarter. Geiger also added that the “tech dependent” companies share particular characteristics, primarily that they see technology as a tool to develop their business. Tech dependent companies also spend over $2,000/mo on combined communications and IT infrastructure and consulting services – twice as much as customers purchasing conventional communications services spend (which averages under $700/mo). Geiger went on to say that those companies are looking for somebody that is capable of managing “an experience, not an environment." In addition, Cbeyond is also employing professional services talent and cloud sales engineers to help its clients seamlessly migrate from dependence on on-site infrastructure to cloud-based services.
