Texas’s Controlled Substances Act outlines illegal drugs and divides them into four categories called penalty groups. Possession of the drugs included in each penalty group has differing consequences based on how much of the controlled substance is found and which penalty group it is a member of. The penalty group with the most severe punishments is Penalty Group 1, while Penalty Group 4 has the most mild punishments of the four. This is not to say that they are not harsh. Penalty Group 2 contains the likes of MDMA (Ecstasy), Psilocybin (the active component in hallucinogenic mushrooms), and tetrahydrocannabinols.
