The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey estimates that almost 17 percent of American children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 years are obese. Obesity is a serious health concern, so parents should encourage and guide their children to be more active on daily basis. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children between the ages of 6 and 17 years should get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Nowadays, however, due to safety and security, child care minder availability and financial constraints few parent and children have the confidence to allow children to be out and about, playing in parks unsupervised until mom or dad get home from work. Kids are generally forced to conform to the constraints of a child care system or are forced to lead a sedentary life locked up at home in the afternoons. The face of our very lives has been changed to accommodate the era in which we live. For many children access to technology in for of tv games and/or computer games has become more run of the mill. The Nintendo Wii gaming system was the first of its kind to feature a wireless controller that actually detects three-dimension movement. The Wii functions by tracking the player's movements as he holds the Wii remote. Wii can contribute to a healthier life. Some Nintendo Wii games follow more traditional exercise routines. The Wii Fit and EA Sports Active games offer an array of fitness activities, including aerobics, yoga, balance, strength training and sports training. The Nickelodeon Fit game uses popular cartoon characters to guide kids through jumping, leaping, balance and coordination exercises for younger players. Along with the Wii gaming console and wireless remote, many of the exercise and fitness games, such as Wii Fit, require the Wii Balance Board which senses your weight and balance, and tracks the movement of your feet. Some games, such as Zumba Fitness, are designed to be played using the Wii Fitness Belt, which wraps around your waist or thigh and holds the Wii remote. Others require only the remote, which is simply held in the hand as you move through the exercises. Unlike traditional video games, Nintendo Wii exercise games require you to get off the couch and start moving, and although the games might not involve intense activity, they still burn calories. Although Wii can help you burn extra calories each day, virtual fitness games should enhance, rather than replace, a traditional exercise program. A study published in Pediatrics in 2006 found that the energy expenditure of children rose by as much as 22 percent over their resting heart rate while playing sedentary games and as much as 172 percent over their resting heart rate while playing active games. Areas that can be affected by gaming exercise are reduced stress levels, improved mood- state, alleviation of depression, lower anxiety levels and self-esteem can be boosted as confidence grows with better result and more accuracy as players become adept at playing the games. Nintendo Wii gaming may not necessarily be the ideal in so far as a primary source of exercise for our children but it can certainly initiate an exercise is fun attitude and set the stage for an individual who is more predisposed to take on an exercise regime because of positive childhood connotations to exercise itself.
