Stricker missed his chance after taking a long hard look at the opportunity at Atlantic Athletic Club on Thursday – but he wasn’t complaining. The 43-year-old American, perhaps goaded by all the talk that the winner of this year’s PGA Championship would come from the new band of aggressive young guns who have invaded the game, went out and shot an imperious 7-under 63 to match the best-ever score ever shot in a major.(Best Price Titleist 910 D3 Driver) Twenty two other players had already done it, including Greg Norman and Vijay Singh, who have each done it twice, so when Stricker, who had not missed a beat in his magnificent, bogey-free tour of what is certainly no pushover course, stepped up to putt from 12 feet for a birdie and a first-ever 62 by Titleist 910 D3 Driver in a major at the AAC’s 426-yard par-four 9th hole, his last, he was set to add a new chapter to the annuls of golf. It never happened, unfortunately, but Stricker wasn’t letting it spoil his joy at shooting his best ever round in any major and taking the early clubhouse lead in 2011's final major of the season Stricker, leading by two from fellow American 40-something veteran JerryKelly, at that stage, said, “Sometimes when you know it’s for something extra special you dig a little deeper, but I can’t complain. “Just to hit it by Titleist 910 D3 Driver on the fairways was my goal. It’s a very difficult course from the bunkers and rough.” Watching Stricker’s immaculate display, notably on the feared backing which he played Titleist 910 D3 Driver first after teeing off at the 10th, made Atlantic Athletic Club’s Highlands championship course look like an easy one as Stricker went out and birdied the 10th, 11th and 12th and yes, the dreaded par-3 dogleg 15h and the equally watery and almost as frightening 18th that had each cost Tiger Woods a double bogey. Stricker’s charge slowed on the so-called easier front nine coming home, but two more birdies with no bogies in sight were more than enough to put him two shots clear of Kelly as the morning’s starters completed their rounds. Kelly, who opened with a more than respectable 5-under 65, was in turn two strokes clear of another seasoned American Scott Verplank, who shot a 3-under 67 and another two shots in front of Zimbabwe’s beefy Brendon de Jongh, Italian teenager Matteo Manassero, Australian John Senden and Americans Davis Love III, the current US Ryder Cup captain, Bill Hass and Brandt Jobe.
