Stricker missed his chance after taking a long hard look at the opportunity at Atlantic Athletic Club on Thursday – but he wasn’t complaining. Kelly, who opened with a more than respectable 5-under 65, was in turn two strokes clear of another seasoned American Scott Verplank, who shot a 3-under 67 and another two shots in front of Zimbabwe’s beefy Brendon de Jongh, Italian teenager Matteo Manassero, Australian John Senden and Americans Davis Love III, the current US Ryder Cup captain, Bill Hass and Brandt Jobe.
