Rory McIlroy insisted Tuesday that as ghastly as his final-round, back-nine Masters collapse was, it won’t leave any lasting scar tissue. In fact, his two-hour trek under the spotlight and on the list of pine trees featured one four-putt, two three-putts, and also a tee shot that landed between two white cabins and another that ended up in Rae’s Creek will serve just as one enduring lesson. “I’m fine. It turned out an excellent possiblity to win a first major, but it’s only golf towards the end during the day. And you will find three more majors in 2010 and hopefully dozens more that I’ll play within my career.” The final major, however, would be a nightmare. At 21, McIlroy was attempting to become the second-youngest winner with the Masters and took a four-stroke lead to the final round. He still led by one heading towards the 10th tee despite a 1-over par 37 on the front. But proving once again how the Masters doesn’t truly begin prior to the back nine on Sunday, McIlroy shot 43 on the inward nine and fell in a tie for 15th. “I don’t think I was ready,” McIlroy said. “I hit the ball really well that week, the most effective probably I’ve ever hit it. It had been more mental than anything else, just trying to handle your situation better. Not rushing. Hopefully I’ll deal with it better another time that I’m in certainly one of those situations. I displayed a couple of weaknesses during my game which i must work on. “But I think you’ve got to look at the positives. For 63 holes I led the golf tournament.” McIlroy went halfway throughout the world to forget, finishing third the next week in the Malaysia Open. In reality, McIlroy said he had put his Masters implosion behind him 48 hours after signing his scorecard. “I was glad that we was playing the week after just I really could return on the golf course by Callaway X-22 Irons. I didn’t have too much time for it to dwell on what had happened the week before,” McIlroy said. “It was nice to be able only to reunite into contention, play well again but not let what happened the week before affect me in any way.” A little chat with Greg Norman helped, too. Norman had the same collapse in the 1996 Masters when he blew a six-shot lead inside the final round. “Don’t listen to you guys,” McIlroy said Norman told him. “From now on, don’t read golf magazines, don’t grab papers, and don?t watch the Golf Channel. But it’s hard never to. Obviously you would like to keep up to date with what’s going on. But you can’t let people kind of influence what you’re thinking and what you should do. “I’ve taken my very own views from what happened a number of weeks ago and moved on, that is certainly one of the most important things.” Tapping into fonder memories helps, too. This past year at Quail Hollow, McIlroy blew away the field by four shots, closing with six consecutive 3s on his card and shooting a back-nine 30. McIlroy Revives From The Awful Masters? That final round came rushing back to McIlroy as soon as he arrived on the course on Monday. “It’s great to become back here and defend, and it is among the best courses we play all year, one of the better events,” he said. “You get looked after here so well.
