In Toldeo, Ohio, it was reported that woman died because of falling head first into a recycling bin. Her body was only found after her legs was seen sticking out of the corner. This incident is another addition to the increasing number of deaths with recycling bins. Sheila Decoster was found inside the bin after several hours, according to Lucas County Deputy Coroner Diane Barnett. It was the husband of the deceased who found the legs of her wife sticking out of the container which is placed on their porch. After examining the pair of legs sticking out of the recycling bin, the man who first thought that someone threw a dummy at their container found out that it was his wife inside. It did not take him long to realize that his wife has already left him after she got stuck at the recycling bin's bottom. The deceased was 62 years old and has made use of recycling bins for more than a couple of years already. The couple was married for 43 years and has been throwing their trash on the recycling bin located on their porch with no railings. Dizzy spells and aneurysm are some of the health problems which the victim had while still living. It is said that these medical issues together with her recent knee surgery and back pains contributed to her accident. With this accident, a growing concern about the large recycling bins distributed to the neighborhood's residents a couple of years ago started to emerge. Many did not like the fact that these bins are too large to the point that they are already difficult to handle especially by the disabled and the elderly. In some areas, there are also people who target recycling bins and other waste containers. Dumpster diving is not considered new already for some individuals. This term is used to describe the action of people crouching to go through their trash contents at the bottom of the bin. Many times, these individuals are homeless and poverty stricken ones who seek for a meal or any valuable item from the trash. Injuries and impalement from some other trash on the bin are often the result of dumpster diving. The germs on the trash and the poor hygiene of these people cause their wounds to get infected. Besides from these accidents, injuries and even criminal actions often happen due to these individuals fighting over important scraps in the trash. Another major issue involving recycling bins and other large trash receptacles is their propensity to fall victim to vandalism and other petty criminal activities. One common crime is setting the contents of these bins on fire . Being used as props for illegal activities, vandalized, and destruction of property are the other criminal acts that these bins are involved to. Most of the times, these crimes go unpunished. Recycling bins are also one of those areas which local councils spend the most funds into because of replacement and maintenace. Clearly, the primary purpose of recycling bins should be reassessed since they have been both the victim and the one causing the injuries. For easier monitoring of these containers, attaching radio frequency identification devices and microchips have already been recommended by some people.
