Have you set yourself a deadline to submit your manuscript to AuthorHouse for publication? Take a look at your deadline date an make sure it is realistic. You want to set yourself expectations you can achieve and will not leave you disappointed and frustrated. You want to challenge yourself, but make sure the challenges you set are within your reach. Ask yourself, “are my writing goals really SMART?” Review Your Writing Schedule Have you set your daily writing time, daily word goal, picked your favorite time to write and a relaxing place you feel comfortable writing? All of these components will help you succeed in meeting your deadline. If you have not done this, or are not meeting the goals you have set, it’s time to reevaluate and make your goals SMART. Here is an example my own process. Specific Who: Me. I am the only one who can sit down and write my story. What: Complete my manuscript and have a published book. Where: I will write my book at the gym after my workouts (New Year’s resolution # 2!) When: 3 times a week Which: Avoid getting side tracked by chatting with friends at the gym (as happened this week!) Why: To achieve my lifelong ambition of writing and publishing a book. So, my specific goal is to spend 3 evenings a week writing at the gym after my workouts to complete my manuscript and achieve my dream of becoming a published author. Measurable My goal at this stage is to free write at least 1,000 words per writing session, which equates to 3,000 words per week. Attainable I am determined to achieve this goal. All I have to do is stick to my schedule and I will do. I used to think I could write a book. Now I KNOW I can write a book. As Magnus Magnusson said, “I’ve started so I’ll finish.” Realistic The only thing stopping me from writing this book is time. I will make time to write. Therefore my goal is realistic. Time-Bound I have already written 6,000 words, so if I am going to write a 50,000 word novel. That will take me about 16 weeks. Add a couple of weeks to review and edit and I should be submitting my manuscript to AuthorHouse for publication by the beginning of July. I will therefore adjust my deadline to July 1st. Hopefully you are now feeling more comfortable and confident. You should have a much more productive week next week in terms of writing your book. Just think, you will be a published author in just a few months!
