A popular and beautiful way to spend a week or two would be a BAHAMA VACATIONS destination. The Bahamas are comprised of 29 islands that are located in the Atlantic ocean, North of Cuba and to the South of Florida. The area is known as the Caribbean and is a very desired vacation destination due to the beautiful year round weather and many things to do and see. The capital city of Nassau is a much wanted area to visit, and is located on Providence Island, and close to Paradise Island, which is also an island that many people visit every year. With several historic landmarks, including the Christ Church Cathedral, there are options for all tastes. The cathedral was originally built in 1841 and is still a working church, as it has regular services three times on Sundays. Providence Island is also home to the bustling Bay Street, which is a mecca of shopping and nightlife to attract a variety of visitors. The local police in this downtown Nassau area, are dressed in brightly colored uniforms that remind people of palace guards at the British palaces. They will frequently pose for pictures and give visitors local folklore and miscellaneous information to enhance the whole experience. Another beautiful island is Grand Bahama Island, where at least 50,000 people live full time. One of its biggest attractions is the magical Mermaid Pond, which has legends surrounding its history, such as it is believed to have been a place mermaids lived in and still exist. This small freshwater body of water is purported to be connected to ocean by an extended underwater cavern that runs more than 1000 feet. If the desire to visit an area well known for its excellent sailing and boating adventures, then The Abacos islands are the place to be. The Abacos are located in what is called The Out Islands, which are less populated and visited than the main islands of Paradise, Providence and Grand Bahama islands. The Abacos are also full of many miles of beautiful beaches, nightlife and resort living. One of the most memorable landmarks on The Abacos islands is the Hope Town Lighthouse, which is located on Elbow Bay. The historic, red and white striped lighthouse was built by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service in the 1860's, with 101 steps from floor to top and is 89 feet high.
