One of its biggest attractions is the magical Mermaid Pond, which has legends surrounding its history, such as it is believed to have been a place mermaids lived in and still exist. This small freshwater body of water is purported to be connected to ocean by an extended underwater cavern that runs more than 1000 feet. If the desire to visit an area well known for its excellent sailing and boating adventures, then The Abacos islands are the place to be. The Abacos are located in what is called The Out Islands, which are less populated and visited than the main islands of Paradise, Providence and Grand Bahama islands. The Abacos are also full of many miles of beautiful beaches, nightlife and resort living. One of the most memorable landmarks on The Abacos islands is the Hope Town Lighthouse, which is located on Elbow Bay. The historic, red and white striped lighthouse was built by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service in the 1860's, with 101 steps from floor to top and is 89 feet high.
