Montgomerie won a personal best fifth title of the season with a final round of 70 to finish three shots clear of Ireland\’s Padraig Harrington. The Scot became the first player to win more than 1 million (140,000 euro) in a season and now has his sights set on the record of six European Tour victories in a year. Harrington, who missed out on a Ryder Cup debut by two shots two years ago, came through the harrowing ordeal to leap into Europe\’s side for Boston next month. Harrington had to finish joint second in the tournament, but finished alone in second, a shot ahead of Australian Jarrod Moseley, winner of the Heineken Classic earlier this year.Callaway Golf The 27-year-old Dubliner stood on the final tee of the final qualifying event needing a bogey six to knock Swede Robert Karlsson out of an automatic spot. He went into the rough both off the tee and with his third shot, but pitched to eight feet and sank the putt for a par five to secure his place at The Country Club.Classical Golf Open runner-up Jean Van de Velde secured the other top 10 spot. Karlsson birdied the last three holes for a 65 in a brave bid to save his place, but Harrington kept his nerve to nudge the Swede out of the top ten. Harrington dropped four shots in the first four holes, but re-grouped to play the remaining 14 holes in four under, eagling the long 11th for the second day running.Titleist Golf Harrington, who also finished second in last week\’s West of Ireland Classic in Galway, advanced from 14th to 10th in the final table. Andrew Coltart, 11th in the standings at the start of the week, closed with a 66 to Harrington\’s 72, but joint fifth spot was just not quite enough for him to earn an automatic place.XXIO Golf John Bickerton was another player in with a chance of making a Ryder Cup debut. He needed to win and after 10 holes was in second place two behind Montgomerie. But the European Tour Number One had three birdies in four holes from the 11th to move clear and Bickerton eventually finished fourth.
