The Union Public Service Commission has already published the notification for civil services examination for the year 2012-2013 and the last date of submission of the application form is 20th May 2012. The civil services examination is conducted by the UPSC in order to select officers for various ministries and departments of the central government. All the positions are group ‘A’ and group ‘B’ administrative posts that include Indian Administrative and police service along with the Indian Foreign service and the Indian Revenue Service. The UPSC result for the Indian Civil Services Preliminary 2011 – 2012 is already out and successful candidates should go through extensive preparation for the main exam as well as the interview round. They are also required to make them familiar with the new pattern that has been introduced from the year 2011in order to successfully crack the toughest examination of the country. The first stage of the civil services examination is the CSAT or Civil Service Aptitude Test which is an objective type test and consist two papers common to all candidates. From the year 2011 UPSC has put special emphasis on the civil services aptitude of the candidate as well as the moral and ethical qualities of his decision making capability. Successful candidates for the main examination are selected by the UPSC and the total number of successful candidates in the preliminary UPSC result is generally 10 – 14 times of the total number of vacancies. For candidates aspiring to successfully crack the civil services 2012 – 2013 in depth and extensive knowledge of national as well as international current affairs is extremely important. Practicing with the model question papers can be extremely important in this respect and regular follow up of the newspapers and the news channels for national and international news can really improve the UPSC result of any candidate by a considerable extent. The main exam is quite different from the preliminary exams as • It is an essay or descriptive type examination. • The candidates are required to select to optional subjects from a list of subjects provided by the UPSC. • There are some restrictions on selecting the optional some subjects and candidates should better be aware of them. • The English and the Essay paper along with the general studies paper are common to all candidates. • Both the English paper and the language paper carries 300 marks each and are qualifying in nature, each of the two optional papers and the general studies paper carries 600 marks and the essay paper carries 200 marks.
